EFFORT STANDARDIZATION OF THE TRAWLING FISHERY OFF SANTA CATARINA AND THE ANALYSIS OF ABUNDANCE VARIATION OF THE SQUID Loligo plei USING A GENERALIZED LINEAR MODEL

    Published date: 12/11/2010
A Generalized Linear Model was used to standardize the effort of the summer offshore trawling fishery directed towards the long-finned squid Loligo plei off Santa Catarina (Southern Brazil). The model, adjusted to catch and effort data available for eight fishing seasons from 1990 to 1997, revealed that pair trawlers and fish double rig trawlers were 7.5 and 3 times as efficient as shrimp double rig trawlers. In addition, annual coefficients indicated that the abundance of summer squid concentrations oscillated possibly in a cyclic pattern, reaching peaks in the 1992 and 1993 seasons and troughs in the 1990 and 1994 seasons. When compared to the results obtained in a previous effort standardization of the same data set using Fishing Power estimates, it was found that this less adequate method lead to distinct interpretations about trawling fishing and population patterns of L. plei off Santa Catarina.
