• Abstract

Sedimentary architecture of the rhone turbidite system during the pliocene.

    Published date: 17/11/2008
Our study aims to assess the role of salt tectonics on the architecture of the Pliocene sequence of the Rhône deep-sea fan, Gulf of Lions. The study is based on seismic and chronostratigraphic interpretation of multichannel seismic profiling and boreholes. Sediment thickness distribution illustrated by an isopach map indicates how salt deformation has influenced the fan’s sedimentary architecture. Syn-depositional (syn-Pliocene) halokinesis is the main mechanism responsible for the turbidite organization as a series of isolated depocenters. Pos-depositional (syn-Quaternary) mechanism of differential sedimentary loading has also affected locally the present-day sedimentary distribution by post-depositional stretching and compaction of the Pliocene sequence.
