ABSTRACT
Mobile notifications are clickable messages commonly used to attract
users’ attention at specific times and in different contexts.
Among other uses, scheduled notification interventions are tools
that can remind users of something important or recommend information
that may be needed. Using notifications to promote interaction
between web-based systems and mobile users has become
common practice. However, there are still challenges related to
managing these notifications, such as knowing which notifications
were acknowledged and triggered by users, or enabling them to
identify ignored notifications. In this article, we introduce ’Resolve
Notification’, a framework that supports scheduling notifications
on smart devices. Our solution enables the creation of features that
make it easy for web system developers to generate notifications,
and for individualized management of notifications and interactions
scheduled by system administrators as well as mobile end users.
We tested the framework with developers and employed the system
in a preliminary educational case study - the results suggest that
’Resolve Notification’ has the potential to be used for managing
web and mobile notification systems.
