FISHERY SAMPLING PROGRAM DEVELOPED FOR THE ITAJAÍ HARBOR (SC)
Published date: 22/10/2010
Landings of the industrial fishing fleet in the Itajaí harbor (Santa Catarina, Brazil) have been monitored since 1995 by “Centro de Educação Superior de Ciências Tecnológicas da Terra e do Mar”, “Universidade do Vale do Itajaí”, in association with REVIZEE Program (Living Resources of the Economic Exclusive Zone, Ministry of the Environment, Brazilian Government). The objective has been to produce continuous fishing and biological data of traditional and/or emerging fisheries off Southern Brazil, which may allow to estimate their sustainable catches. The methodology employed is based on daily visitation at representative landing points of the Itajaí harbor, for the obtention of: (a) fishing data; (b) size structure estimates of selected species; (c) biological samples. The optimization of this work, has depended on the representative coverage of landings, and on the development of a standardized and efficient sampling procedure at the landing points. This report describes the methodology developed for the Itajaí industrial fishing sampling program, emphasizing the limitations found and the estimates of success.
