Trafficking in Persons and the War in Ukraine

    Published date: 22/10/2025

The article's main objective is to relate the war in Ukraine to the phenomenon of human trafficking, focusing on the absence of a significant increase in trafficking cases since the beginning of the conflict in 2022. Using a hypothetical-deductive approach and combining quantitative and qualitative data from sources such as the UN and IOM, the study explores the factors that may explain this unexpected trend. The research highlights that, although the war has created conditions conducive to trafficking, such as mass displacement and the vulnerability of women and children, the Ukrainian state has maintained its functionality, implementing effective protection and prevention measures. It concludes that, while the risks of trafficking remain high, the coordinated response of the Ukrainian government and the international community may have mitigated the problem. However, underreporting of cases and the complexity of the conflict require further research to fully understand the dynamics involved.
