    Contemporary iconoclasm and the culture of spectacle: the case of Marielle Franco

    The article examines the iconoclasm and its traits about the theory of media culture of Douglas Kellner. Starting with a historical analysis of the byzantine iconoclasm, the text debates the persistence and the symbolic power of the images. Moving on, it explores the contemporary incident when the plaque in honor of councilwoman Marielle Franco was destroyed and it was exposed by politicians.The attitude and conduct of parliamentarians was taken as a strategy to defy their opposites and feed the tension on the social and politician scenarios. This analysis reinforces the complexity of the culture of spectacle in our contemporary society, and reveals a comprehension of the symbolical and political power of the images, as well as the tensions related to a culture marked by the influence of politics and violence spectacularized.
