Studies on strategy in organizations have featured in corporate and academic discussions, and in the literature on the subject. In this context, the construct of strategy and the strategy of people management are related. In order to analyze the alignment between the professional career development program and the strategic management of people, a qualitative, exploratory, case study was carried out at the Brazilian Steel company Usiminas Group. The object of analysis was the company’s Avançar program, which was designed to leverage the development of 144 employees, including lawyers, engineers and administrators - the categories with the highest losses of talent and disengagement due to a lack of job prospects within the organization. The results show that the program is aligned with human resources management. The evidence corroborates the model of Becker, Huselid and Ulrich (2001). The organization intends to continue its research in the development of the Avançar program. This article contributes to the literature on professional career leverage programs.
