    WHY ISN’T THE QUEUE MOVING?

    Published date: 24/09/2026

Dilemma: This Teaching Case addresses a management problem faced by the managers and owners of Baixa Verde Loterias, a lottery shop located in the city of Santa Cruz da Baixa Verde, in the interior of the state of Pernambuco, during the COVID-19 pandemic. In a strategic analysis, it is possible to visualize the threat that the health crisis represented for the business, since the scenario prevailing at that time was beyond the company's control. In this circumstance, in order to minimize the adversities encountered, emerging strategies were adopted that the students will be able to evaluate.
Educational Objective: The main objective of the case is to lead students to develop mathematical solutions using data collected from on-site observation and direct interviews with managers, with the purpose of deepening the discussion of the dilemma involved.
Contextualization: The case portrays the challenge that the owners faced in making payments at the lottery shop. João and Sanny try to decide on a more effective solution to improve their services.
Main Theme: The case aims to reflect on the difficulties and developments faced by the owners. Through subjective and objective questions, it is possible to make more informed decisions about the lottery's operations.
Audience: The case can be used in the areas of Production Management, Production Planning and Control or Operational Research.
Originality: The case highlights tools that favor student teaching and learning, since the subject is traditionally taught without the application of active methodologies. There are no teaching cases in the literature involving Queueing Theory; they are usually case studies.

Revista Alcance

Revista Alcance is a Brazilian free access journal, published every four months, linked to the Graduate Program in Administration and the Professional Master’s degree in Administration, Internationalization and Logistics Program of the University of Vale do Itajaí – Univali. We seek to publish theoretical-empirical and technological articles in the areas of Business Administration. Different theoretical and methodological perspectives are welcome, as long as they are consistent with and relevant to the development of the area.
