IS THE ACTIVITY SYSTEM OF GOL AIR TRANSPORTATIONS SIMILAR TO THE LOW COST LOW FARE COMPANIES OF THE NORTH HEMISPHERE? A CASE STUDY

    Published date: 04/09/2008
The Civil Aviation Industry has offered the best examples of firms that follow the cost leadership model, as proposed by Michael Porter (1986). In Particular, the Southwest Airlines, established in 1971, is said to be a successful case of design and implementation of an extremely efficient activity system. More recently, the GOL Air Transportations has been frequently cited as successfully adapted the low cost model to the Brazilian conditions. In this paper, a case study is conducted to verify to what extent GOL's activity system is similar to other airline firms and to the Southwest's, in particular. As a conclusion, they differ in several important aspects. This study contributes to the development of the low cost model and to the discussion about the application, in Brazil, of models designed in foreign contexts.
