The enterprise Carqueijo Artesanato was born out of an entrepreneurial vision, in 1997, based on a local handicraft activity of weaving. The business was set up by the couple Isaias and Raimunda Nonata Sancho, fulfilling a dream of several generations of the Sancho family. But perfecting the process and consolidating the business were the job of Gilmar Sancho, the couple’s son. At the start of this process, there were lot’s of difficulties, such as the fact that Gilmar lacked a knowledge of the basics of how to start up and run a business, how to win resources, and how to manage people, among other aspects. Everything was new to him. But little by little, he learned all that was needed, gaining information and advice from SEBRAE-CE (a non-profit entity that promotes small businesses). Considering the social and cooperative aspects, he organized the community around a single objective, turning it into a large, well-developed local productive arrangement (LPA). The teaching case in question aims to show how entrepreneurialism can transform a community that is struggling to survive and generate income, into an economically sustainable generator of jobs. It is based on the theoretical approaches of Entrepreneurialism, Creative Economy and LPA, and involves the disciplines of Entrepreneurial Management, Local Development, Environmental Management and Social Responsibility.
