Film tourism in the context of the Film in Minas Program: The filmmakers' vision of the tourism-cinema synergy

    Published date: 02/06/2022

This article focuses on the Film in Minas Program, developed by the current Secretary of State for Culture and Tourism of Minas Gerais, and is inscribed in the field called film-induced tourism. Some questions guided the research: do the feature films supported by this cultural public policy contribute to publicizing the filmed locations in Minas Gerais and promoting tourism in this state? Did the local tourist infrastructure meet the demands of the filming? Has the local population in the municipalities where the films were shot benefited in any way? The objective of this text is to investigate, with film directors supported by the Film in Minas Program, whether these audiovisual productions contribute to increasing tourism in this state, favoring the tourism-cinema synergy. With a qualitative approach, the methodology involved a bibliographic study, questionnaires and online interviews with directors of the selected films. The answers were interpreted with the aid of content analysis. Whether considering the direct or indirect impacts of film-induced tourism, the results showed that the synergy between tourism and cinema is not simple to be achieved. Thus, tourism will not always be promoted simply by the fact that certain locations appear on movie screens, although this is something relevant and can, unquestionably, happen.
