Sustainable development is a complex phenomenon. The research on that area requires a multidimensional perspective, which considers different aspects related to environmental, political, economic, social, and cultural issues. Nevertheless, studies on tourism and sustainable development do not articulate a theoretical debate on the dimensions of sustainability or follow a systematized method in the analysis of empirical data. The procedures undermine the conclusions of such investigations. To fill this gap, the paper proposes a theoretical framework for qualitative data analysis in the research on tourism and sustainable development. The proposal was developed over the last few years and validated in works that address different case studies. As a result, the method proved to be operational for interpreting information from distinct methodological procedures and provided theoretical robustness to the analysis of reality.
