A hackathon is a short-term, collaborative and intensive event involving programming, design and the development of creative solutions to specific problems or challenges. The aim of this study is to analyze the concept of the innovation event – hackathon –, with a case study of the Hackatour Cataratas event. The methodology is exploratory and descriptive, with a qualitative approach and a case study. Hackathons are interesting for the tourism sector because they offer the opportunity to develop solutions with the participation of professionals from different areas. Looking specifically at Hackatour Cataratas, it was possible to identify positive impacts such as the development of innovative and technological solutions, in stimulating entrepreneurship, the event encouraged the creation of new companies and startups in the tourism sector, through the development of ideas and projects that can be transformed into businesses, in attracting investments, by presenting innovative solutions, the participating teams can attract the attention of investors interested in supporting projects in the tourism sector. The event has been taking place since 2015 in Foz do Iguaçu and/or online and has already had 12 editions with specific themes each year. Finally, they can contribute to improving the tourist experience, making travel more enjoyable, safe and efficient. The article mainly contributes to advancing the discussion on event innovation and its impact on the tourism market.
