    Published date: 27/06/2009
ABSTRACT: The purpose of this paper is to examine travel habits of low income classes, seeking to develop a typology for these consumers linked to number and duration of trips as well as age. The study is justified by the importance of tourism as industry, for the attention aroused by low-income segment and finally due to the shortage of scholarly work focused on tourism and low income. After reviewing the literature a quantitative study (survey) was conducted. A convenience sample of 861 individuals was selected considering socio-economic classification, belonging to the classes CD and residents in the city of Sao Paulo. Data were analyzed with the use of descriptive and multivariate statistics. The analysis indicated the existence of four groups, in which the distinctive feature was age and level of income. Four groups were found: mature adult, adults, adolescents and youth and young adults, each with its own characteristics.
