Implications of Familiarization Trips for Career Development in Travel Agencies: A Study in the Luxury Tourism Segment

    Published date: 17/05/2025

Purpose – The main objective of this study was to identify the impact of participation in famtours on the career development of travel agency professionals, with a special focus on the luxury tourism segment.

Design/methodology/approach – This is an exploratory, qualitative research study based on semi-structured interviews. Specifically, the contributions of famtours to improving the skills, confidence, competence and remuneration of professionals were investigated. The content of the interviews supported the creation of a theoretical framework that favored the representation of the relationships between the different elements associated with the theme.

Findings – The results suggest that famtours have a remarkably positive effect on employee satisfaction and motivation. Travel expands an individual's repertoire of the product being sold, increasing confidence and proficiency in the job. Additionally, it is worth highlighting the positive influence on increased sales capacity, which can lead to tangible financial rewards, such as increased commissions and career advancement.

Research limitations – The limitations of the research are mainly associated with convenience sampling and the complexity of the qualitative analysis of a large textual corpus.

Practical implications – The research contributes to the understanding of the consequences that participation in Famtours has on the careers of tourism professionals. Managers should be aware of the positive influence that travel has on their employees' sales capacity, investing in famtour programs as a strategy to improve employee training and motivation. However, it is necessary to use the tool in a way that does not create incompatible expectations in employees, in order to avoid conflict and internal competition.

Originality/value – This paper contributes to the existing literature by expanding knowledge about famtours, its effects on travel agents and its possibilities of use as a business strategy.
