THE PROCESS OF DESIGNING SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIES BASED ON PRINCIPLES OF COMPLEXITY THEORY: THE CASE OF TWO FRENCH RETAIL GROUPS

    Published date: 31/07/2008
This article analyzes the process by which the strategy of sustainable development is formed in two major European companies. The research was carried out in two stages. 1) theoretical research, guided by an abductive logic; 2) case studies with two major French Retailer Groups. The analysis of these two cases has revealed three important aspects of their sustainable development strategies: Corporate Governance; Corporate Ethics and Organizational Learning. The case studies also showed that these aspects can be explored according to four propositions, based on some principles of Complexity Theory, considering the strategy of sustainable development strategy as a process. (1) whole/part, (2) recursive and retroactive, (3) dialogic and (4) self-eco-organization.
