Tourism Motivation Scale (TMS): a measurement scale for research in brazilian contexts

    Published date: 12/09/2024

Despite the growing recognition of the importance of research on consumer behavior in the field of tourism, both by managers, tourism agents, and governmental bodies, a significant gap still exists in understanding the underlying motivations of Brazilian tourists undertaking journeys amidst the profound transformations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aims to deepen the analysis of driving factors for tourism consumers in Brazil, as well as to develop, synthesize, and validate a tourism perspective through a Tourism Motivation Scale (TMS). The investigative process involved a meticulous lexical review of previous studies accessed through national and international databases, in order to establish a solid foundation of motivations related to tourism. The TMI was applied to a sample of 974 tourism consumers, undergoing stringent validation procedures, demonstrating its integrity and reliability with its 15 variables distributed across three distinct factors. The application of the TMI enables the analysis of factors driving consumer engagement in tourism activities and destination selection, allowing for a detailed investigation of discrepancies and the identification of the most relevant stimuli for the focal destination.
