Metrics for analyzing active tourism in tourist destinations based on urban design

    Published date: 01/08/2024

Urban interventions are carried out in territories to encourage active mobility through walking, cycling and the use of public transport instead of motor vehicles to mitigate the carbon footprint and promote more equitable cities. These transformations encourage active tourism, which enables more reliable experiences with the local culture of the destination. The objective of this study was to develop a research proposal to identify the potential of cities to develop/implement active tourism as a competitive differentiator. To do this, he used the city of Niterói (RJ, Brazil) as an example. Furthermore, 36 volunteers (tourist demand) contributed to the work, divided into four groups: guided walking, walking using an audio guide, free walking and cycle tourism. The use of pedometers, the Strava app and smartphones for videos and photos made it possible to: map routes; measure physical activity levels; understand the intensity of effort and understand the interpretation of the tourist space during travel. The results showed the possibility of active travelj in Niterói for 10km and tourist experiences according to the activity choice profile lasting from 1h to 4h.
