Immortality of the body, digital cloning, and technology: : hope or trap?

    Published date: 21/08/2025

This essay analyses the episode Be Right Back from the Netflix series Black Mirror, which explores the digital cloning of an organic body through artificial intelligence. The plot unfolds around the protagonist, the deceased’s wife, who uses computer science and biotechnology to recreate a virtual (and later) biosynthetic version of him. Although physically identical, the clone fails to replicate human emotions and nuances, revealing the limitations of technology. The aim of this essay is to problematize transhumanism, a movement that seeks to overcome human finitude through technology, reducing life to a collection of replicable algorithmic data. Thus, digital immortality is questioned as an illusion, given that the human experience, with its emotions and subjectivities, is irreproducible. In conclusion, this text draws attention to the ethical and social implications of this pursuit, emphasizing that mortality is intrinsic to the human condition.
