The transposition of the fictional landscape of the Hobbit Hole from the works of J. R. R. Tolkien: an analysis of Brazilian themed accommodations

    Published date: 14/11/2024

The present study sought to understand how the landscape of Middle-earth, present in the work of the writer J. R. R. Tolkien, is semiotically transposed from the narrative languages of literature and cinema to the cenarized, thematized and habitable of tourism, especially as an accomodation that becomes an experience of immersion of the guest in a possible fictional world. To this end, surveys of thematic lodgings were carried out in accommodation websites during the period from November 2022 to April 2023 and, subsequently, it was decided to focus on the accommodation in Brazil. To assist in the analyses, the field of Tourism and Geography were essential, in addition to the field of Literature and Narratology. For a better understanding of the data, tables and graphs were elaborated. From the completion of the stages, it was noticed how the local topography can directly interfere in the ease of having a geographical position similar to that of the Hobbit Hole. Besides that, it was found that there is a structural and limiting question concerning the possibilities of specific language codes for each of the various representational systems. That is to say, there is clear complexity and difficulty in transposing the two-dimensional text to reality anchored in the concrete world and facing the scarcity of physical and economic resources. Finally, it is understood the potential that this work presents by giving visibility to the "landscape thematization" as a builder of experiences, contributing to the implementation of a tourist attraction based on the "hospitality of possible fictional worlds". From a practical point of view, the survey sought to assist future entrepreneurs to use new parameters while designing themed accomodations, based on Tolkien’s imaginary and the fantastic universe of the Hobbit holes.
