NEW PERSPECTIVES FOR THE PEDAGOGIES OFOF GENDER IN EARLY CHCHILDHOOD EDUCATION

    Published date: 30/10/2014
This article examines the pedagogies of gender in the everyday routines of infant schools during play. In this assertion, we focus on the teachers’ observation of the standards for bodily contact between the children, the disciplinary power and the prevailing discourses of teachers arising from the theoretical contributions of Cultural Studies and Gender. In terms of methodology, we conducted a Focus Group with twelve preschool teachers of the network municipal school in a town of Serra Gaúcha/RS. Content analysis of the data showed that the teachers have difficulties in coping with and talking about situations that involve sexuality and gender identities in children’s play. We conclude that the pedagogical practices and reflections of teachers are wrapped up in heteronormative standards, and we see that their behaviors are the result of a sexist culture and discourses that are reproduced in day to day routines, going unchallenged. The teachers reported that they feel the need to be better prepared to deal with everyday situations in the school day involving gender issues, therefore we indicate the training of teachers as essential in this process.
