Abstract

Contextualization: This article is the result of a research conducted in the municipality of Caçador, in the State of Santa Catarina, Brazil, focusing on high school students' perception of sustainability and human rights issues.

Objectives: The research presented here was funded by Fapesc (Foundation for Research and Innovation of the State of Santa Catarina) and aimed to investigate the overall understanding of high school students regarding the existence of the Agenda 2030 and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Methodology: The article is divided into the following elements: a) a brief overview of the history of sustainability, especially since the 20th century; b) the challenges of SDG 4 (quality education) in Brazil; c) the methodology adopted in the research; d) the dilemmas of education in the municipality of Caçador, especially in high schools; e) some graphs resulting from the conducted research, and f) final considerations. It is essential to note that the research presented here had a bibliographical methodological approach with a quantitative and qualitative data analysis.

Results: This work is analytically focused, without aiming to provide definitive answers to the main problem. The discussions here lead us to understand that education in our country is a national issue, and the reality experienced by high school students in our municipality is just an echo of a more global problem. It is further understood that education is a crucial element for social transformation to meet the demands and requirements that the Agenda 2030 sets forth failure to meet these demands could jeopardize our present and future as humanity.
