Abstract

Contextualization: The adoption of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 2003 represented a milestone in the governance of intangible cultural heritage (ICH), consolidating an international legal instrument for its protection. The Convention reinforces international cooperation as a fundamental principle, especially through multinational applications to UNESCO's representative lists, promoting intercultural dialog and encouraging joint efforts to safeguard ICH.

Objectives: The article critically analyzes the dynamics of international cooperation in the context of the ICH, with a focus on multinational nominations and their relationship to international law and global governance. The study examines whether such applications are both a result and a means of fostering international cooperation, taking as a case study the “Mediterranean Diet”, inscribed on the UNESCO list in 2013 by seven states.

Method: The research is grounded in the theory and practice of international and comparative law, in dialog with international relations theory, adopting a transnational perspective to understand the interaction between states and communities in the protection of ICH.

Results: The analysis confirms that multinational applications boost cooperation between states and communities by promoting the shared safeguarding of ICH. The case of the Mediterranean Diet illustrates this potential, especially in Europe, where political and economic integration facilitates collaboration. However, challenges such as political and legal differences require the adaptation of cooperation mechanisms beyond the European context, as is the case with Morocco. The conclusion is that the CIP can strengthen international cooperation and build bridges between nations and communities that share a common heritage.
